NARRATIVE ON PRINT - The Abbey Pend, as it is commonly called, is the gatehouse of the Abbey, and is placed at right angles to the west front of the Church. It consisted of beautifully groined arches. There may still be seen in it the groove of the portcullis which defended the entrance to the Abbey, and which has long formed the seal of the Burgh of Arbroath. (Notes by George Hay, 1883)
