NARRATIVE
ON PRINT - Within about 3 minutes' walk from
the market-cross of Arbroath, or the spot
were the market-cross once stood, a fine view
is obtained of Whiting Ness, the commencement
of a long line of some of the grandest rock
scenery in the kingdom. The Cliffs are, and
always have been, a favourite resort of the
inhabitants of Arbroath, and of visitors to
the district. Their attractions are many.
There is the great attraction, so keenly felt
by all people who live in towns, many of whom,
as in Arbroath, may have to spend most of
their waking hours, six days out of every
seven, in a dusty spinning-mill, of breathing
the freshest of fresh air. Then, this pleasure
is enjoyed amidst scenery which, while it
may well excite the 'fine frenzy' of the poet,
must also now and again cause a thrill of
admiration to pass through even the most commonplace
mind. (Notes
by George Hay, 1883)
